An introduction

“Hi, I’m Kat.
I sing out of tune,
I wear hooded sweatshirts in the summer
and I bake.
Let’s be friends.”

I think that everyone has a certain special essence to them, that they can reflect on, hold, and show to the world as a testament of their pride. Perhaps it's their eyes, their disarming smile, or their impossibly tiny ankles. Or maybe it's their ability to add and subtract without a hiccup while running a six minute mile. Whatever it may be, it’s a source of comfort, a bit of vanity we can all indulge in, and something that makes us shine just a little bit brighter to the rest of the world. Mine? I came by it honestly… I got it from my Mama.

While I didn’t inherit dog-eared pages filled with generations of old world recipes handed down from mother to daughter, I would like to believe she gave me something infinitely more valuable and suited to me. My mother taught me how to be a friend. It sounds simple right? Even so, I feel it is the very best part of me. The relationships that fill my life are varied, colorful, and often times challenging. It is through them that I glean the most about my true self.

I learned to bake, in part, to share a little piece of myself with the people in my life. Though Julia Child I am not, my cupcake-making ability is definitely my second favorite thing about myself. After 26 years, I've embraced what I've always known to be true: there's comfort in sharing sugar with friends.
